About Us

The Present

The Government, as part of their changes to the current broadcasting legislation, are releasing frequencies to enable a new level of broadcasting, Community Radio.

Wayland Community Radio hopes to be one of these radio stations, serving the Breckland area of Norfolk.

Our vision is to encourage social integration of the many people moving into the Watton/Swaffham area, those who have recently retired, or moved because of the offer of work. We will train local people, with local voices and local knowledge to be the volunteers running this Community Radio Station. WCR will work hard to become the focal point for information, in the broadcasting area, giving the opportunity to inform, promote views/opinions and events.

Another of our aims is to encourage anyone with an interest in broadcasting to find out if they have the potential and then provide the training. All our programmes will be content driven (rather than presenter driven) and, like any professional radio station, any broadcast must be of the highest possible standard. Quality will always be at the centre of all that we do.

The Future

The long term programme structure will depend upon the skills and talents of the people in the community.  will be from 7pm – 10pm each We'll continue to have  specialist music programmes as the focal point of each weekday evening, with regular inputs of news and events. At the weekend there is the opportunity to have a more interactive style with more listener involvement. Sunday will start with a more traditional style of breakfast programme, bringing together the many churches in the area. We'll also continue with programmes in other languages at tne weekend.

The content of all broadcasts will be specific to the Breckland area and relative to local lives, interests and opinions.

Why?

Why not? Why shouldn’t the Breckland area be involved in this new initiative?

We are located in an area of Norfolk that has seen the rural economy and community change in recent years. This initiative may be something that will encourage the community spirit and social integration.

This project will give our listeners not only really local information and entertainment, but the opportunity to be involved.

The BBC and Commercial Radio have much larger areas to cover, they therefore have to be very selective in what they do and also have to satisfy the needs of a large organisation. WCR is independent and answerable only to the listeners and community which we serve.

Wayland Community Radio is very fortunate to be supported supported by a team of experienced broadcasting professionals, but the community will provide presenters, reporters and general assistants as well as the main source of material.
